Bandwidth Calculator 1.0
Overview
Bandwidth is defined as the number of bits that are transmitted across a line within a specific time period. A line always has a maximum bandwidth, defined as the maximum number of bits transmitted within a specific time period. This calculator provides a means of determining the various factors affected by bandwidth. In the context of this calculator, there are three factors, namely duration, bitrate and file size. Enter two factors and the calculator will determine the 3rd.
If you know a line's bitrate and you know how much time you have on that line, the calculator will determine the maximum file size that can be transmitted across the line. Alternatively, if you have the file size and bitrate, the calculator will determine how long it will take to transfer the file. Lastly, if you know the file size and the time available for transfer, the calculator will determine the bitrate required to transfer the file in the given time period.
Operating the calculator
The calculator takes two values and determines the third. Given this, you need to select the first two value criteria, enter the actual values and select the unit of measure for each value. The result is determined and displayed in real time, i.e. as you type. You can change the unit of measure for the 3rd value and the calculator will adjust the ouput. The various units of measure are outlined below:
